My husband and I embarked on a new chapter of our lives by moving into a rented apartment. We were fortunate to find a delightful landlady who was generous enough to offer us a rent reduction, given that we were newlyweds. Alongside us was our kitten, who, for some inexplicable reason, took an instant dislike to the bathroom. Despite our efforts to investigate, we couldn’t find anything causing this peculiar aversion.
However, a mysterious rustling sound from the bathroom in the dead of the night on our third day made us more curious. The noise was enough to startle our kitten, who instantly puffed up and started hissing. Dutifully, my husband went to inspect the source. To my surprise, I heard a cheerful exclamation, “Well, hello!” Intrigued, I walked in to find an adorable sight — a tiny hamster surrounded by bits of toilet paper right there on the floor.
Our morning phone call with the landlady unveiled the mystery behind our tiny visitor. It turned out the hamster, named Peanut, belonged to her grandson. It had mysteriously disappeared a while back and seemed to have lived incognito under our bathtub all this time.
Here’s where things took an amusing twist. Our kitten, who was initially on high alert after the hamster’s midnight appearance, began to show curiosity, and before long, it was clear that a bond was forming. From soft sniffs to gentle paw pokes, our kitten’s interaction with Peanut was heartwarming. Remarkably, Peanut reciprocated this newfound friendship and never showed any signs of fear.
We decided to make Peanut a part of our family and purchased a hamster cage complete with a wheel. But if we thought that would limit Peanut’s explorations, we were wrong. More so, the little fellow seemed to have adopted a nurturing attitude towards our kitten — scavenging for lettuce leaves or bits of paper to make the kitten’s bed more comfortable. The sight of their unlikely camaraderie is nothing short of a little miracle!
