Risky Selfie Encounter: Tourist Trampled by Elephant in India

An audacious tourist faced a life-threatening encounter with an elephant during his Indian vacation when his quest for a novel selfie went disastrously wrong. The reckless decision to infringe upon a wild animal’s mealtime resulted in him being aggressively trampled by the creature, with the shocking altercation caught vividly on video.

The shocking incident has since spread like wildfire on the internet, reinforcing the perilous consequences when naive curiosity blurs the line into outright heedlessness.

2021’s Most Dangerous Selfie

R. Basavaraju, the wayward adventurer, had allegedly wandered into a prohibited forest zone near a temple in Karnataka, Southwestern India, on August 10. According to Daniel Osorio, a fellow tourist who managed to film the entire fiasco, Basavaraju tried to take a selfie with the elephant, peacefully enjoying a snack of roadside carrots, using a camera flash from across the road.

What initially appeared as a daring exploit promptly spiraled into a hazardous situation.

A Jumbo Encounter

The recorded video shows Nelly, the gigantic elephant, calmly standing before she suddenly raises her trunk and charges past a slowly moving car towards Basavaraju. After tripping and falling face-down on the road, the elephant catches up to him and forcefully stomps him multiple times, leaving him without trousers and underwear before she retreats.

Remarkably, Basavaraju quickly recovers his senses, stands up, and escapes the scene. He later received medical treatment for his injuries.

A Pricey Photo: Fine and Public Apology

Upon the incident’s conclusion, Basavaraju was slapped with a 25,000 rupees fine (less than $300) by the Indian Forest Department and required to record a public confession. In the apology video, he expressed ignorance of wildlife safety norms and admitted to his uninformed and reckless behavior.

Frightened by the Flash – A Startled Elephant

Osorio, using his phone to capture Nelly’s response to the irritation, explained that the elephant’s reaction was triggered by the sudden flash from Basavaraju’s phone, which startled an otherwise tranquil animal.

“The elephant was peacefully munching on the carrots thrown from a passing truck while a long line of cars were patiently awaiting it to finish. The man decided to use a camera flash for a close-up photo of the elephant, which startled the animal and instigated her to charge,” Osorio stated, recounting the situation.

This unruly incident serves as a stark reminder to heed wildlife reserve rules and let trained professionals handle such delicate situations, instead of assuming the authority and responsibility ourselves.

The Human-Elephant Conflict

With over 30,000 wild elephants making India their home, accounting for 60% of the global Asian elephant population, human-elephant conflicts are not unheard of. While these mammoth animals typically exude peace and tranquility, experts warn they can swiftly turn hostile if provoked or disturbed.

Wildlife experts continually encourage tourists to respect these creatures’ space. It’s crucial to remember that these animals, surviving in rapidly diminishing habitats, aren’t meant solely for our amusement; they’re wild creatures that can exhibit unpredictable behaviors.
