There’s something special about the memory of your first pet. It tends to linger even when other memories start to fade. Some of us realized this dream during adulthood, while others spent their childhood using every trick in the book to convince their parents. These 22 stories beautifully capture the unique influence a first pet can have on our lives.
There was a saying in my family, “When you grow up, you can even have an elephant, if you want!” I had married and yet there was no cat in my life— my mother-in-law strongly disagreed with the idea. One morning, I woke up to the strange sound of meowing from our window. I couldn’t resist and took in the kitten. My husband and mother-in-law found the little furball sleeping on our slipper. His cuteness melted us all, and we decided to keep him. He has a different relationship with each of us, but we can’t help it, we’ve all spoiled him. Thanks to him, my lifelong dream came true.
1Expecting a Lap Dog, We Became the Proud Owners of a Committed Digger

I was merely six when I attended an aquarium fish show at my creative center. The narratives of the show caretaker enthralled me. I immediately took a liking to the frogs that swam in a comical fashion. Despite my mother’s hesitation due to costs, the caretaker suggested we buy tadpoles, which were much cheaper. We took home a couple, and that marked the presence of my first pets. That caretaker remains one of the best saleswomen I have ever met. My tadpoles, Ludwig and Peppi, led a happy 14-year life.
2In My 32nd Year, My Wife and I Became Parents to a Pup.

As a child, I desired any pet, but my parents stood firm in their decision- the only living creatures would be the human residents. That was until we visited a café with several pets. The sight of a lizard stirred feelings I couldn’t ignore. I knew I had to have one. I did a lot of research and convinced my father of my firm decision. Soon, I adopted Cogi, the crested gecko. The first couple of months were spent entranced by his world in the terrarium.

I recall a childhood vacation at my granny’s place in the countryside. There were tantrums thrown at leaving the fresh air, cows, and open fields. But my parents mentioned a surprise waiting for me at my other granny’s house in the city. The sight of a black furball on her couch made my heart skip a beat. I was elated! That’s how we got our cat, Missy. I also dreamed of having a cat but with limited living space, I settled for a hamster
One morning, I saw an abandoned hamster with a plea note for adoption. That’s how our hamster family grew to welcome “Banks”. They brought a joyful element to our evenings with their entertaining antics, like Peanut’s initial struggle with her cheeks and the silly things Banks would do occasionally.

Our family had two guinea pigs who we assumed were both males — until one got pregnant. We suddenly had five adorable guinea pigs in our home. They lived quite a long time, bringing 13 joyful years to our lives. Even though our parents had to frequently remind us to clean their cage when we first got them, we grew to love and take care of them.
The dream of having a dog chased me into my adult years. I realized that I could make it come true when I moved out of my parents’ house. Nevertheless, I kept procrastinating. Finally, on the eve of my 26th birthday, I met a Shiba Inu named Yuki who stole my heart, and he’s been my loyal companion ever since. And in December, I adopted another Shiba Inu, Kimiko, a complete contrast to Yuki but equally wonderful.
3We Gave Marquis a Royal Send-off on His 22nd Year.

I always considered myself a dog person, but my working hours made it impractical for a dog to fit into my solo living setup. So, I adopted a cat, Ollie. We met at the shelter after I found that the cat I initially intended to adopt had been adopted already. Ollie won my heart over instantly with his friendly nature. He’s been my best companion for the past three years.
Even from childhood, I’ve been intrigued by the idea of pot-bellied pigs as pets, which my parents rejected. So, once I moved into my own house, I couldn’t resist not adopting a pig when I saw six-week-old baby pot-bellied pigs at a pet store. The smallest one came right up to me, and his joy of being scooped up was evident. Fast forward to 15 years later, and we continue to have a cherished bond.
4Are First-Time Cat Owners Always This Besotted?

Last New Year, I adopted a Shiba Inu. These dogs are known to be challenging, especially for pet newbies like me. But five and a half years later, my dog and I have grown together. Now, I tend to know more than many long-time dog owners. I studied canine science, psychology, and training rules. Now I have the best, smartest, and most obedient dog. We’ve disproved everyone who suggested against adopting her at first.
When I was 11, I met Layma, who was found near a market as a puppy, spent six months in a shelter, and another six months in foster care. I fell in love with her immediately. The tsunami of love from my first dog swept me away; two hours later, I took Layma home. Now she is 12 years old, showing signs of old age, but her love hasn’t faded.
5At 26, After Dreaming of Owning a Dog for Ten Years, I Finally Had One. It’s a Feeling Beyond Words.

When I was six, my dad brought home Martha, a tiny, dirty ball of fur. To my surprise, when we cleaned her up, a pristine white cat with bright green eyes was revealed. I assumed she was a mouse because of her size and the grey dirt covering her. And it was Martha who helped me overcome my fear of the dark. Now that’s an incredible cat!
When I was in the first grade, my friend’s cat had kittens. Without a second thought, I took one home and declared, “This is Alice, and she’s going to live with us!” Alice was quite the character — a white cat with gray spots, she enjoyed showers and had a knack for cozy snuggle spots.
6I Adopted My First Pet in My Forties

My first pet memory goes back to late high school when my friend and I discovered purebred dogs, training areas, and dog shows. It was such a fascinating world, filled with adorable dogs. After bringing four Cs home in the first quarter, my dad made a deal. He promised me a puppy of my choice, provided I ended the year with straight As. After impressing our teachers with newfound studiousness, our dads had no choice but to fulfill their promises.
7Dad’s Paradigm Shift from ‘Never a Parrot Again’ to ‘Never Regret a Moment’
We had a parrot named Kenny, a real chatterbox. One day, when my dad returned from work, Kenny greeted him with a friendly “Hi, George!” My dad, whose name is Tom, got such a fright that he almost knocked the kettle over. It was a mystery until we learned that Kenny had remembered the name of his previous owner — a man named George.
