The Grampians’ crocked ridges stood burnt-orange in the sunset as Jai “Jazz” Singh drove dirt roads, cattle stations slipping past. This was home – Gunditjmara country, western Vic.
Grail for Jazz was tracking wild horses, mustering with uncles. “Got a mob east, boy.” They corralled brumbies as dust devils danced.
Aboriginal-led tours paid the bills; Jazz showed visitors rock art galleries, shared emu Dreaming stories. “Listen to country.” At waterholes, he taught kids bush lords – yabbies, quandong crumble.
Armidale station needed help – drought-stricken sheep, fences down. Jazz joined the crew, working sunrise-to-sunset. Swag nights under gums, guitar playing “Old Man Murray”.
Weekends Jazz rodeo’d with local mob – campdrafts, bull rides. “He’s got the moves!” A crush on rodeo queen Lily had him grinning.
One night, Grampians fires lit skies red. Jazz helped evacuate elders. At a safety camp, he sang lullabies for scared kids.
Post-fires, Jazz led rehab walks – reseeding burnt tracts, checking wildlife traps. A joey bounced past – country healing.
Night fell clear; Jazz drove ridges, constellations mapped by ancestors. He pulled up at a boulder, whispers in wind. “Still strong.”
