In Sickness and in Health: Last-Minute Wedding at Vet Clinic for Ailing Dog

Since childhood, Cat Kukla shared an inseparable bond with her dog, Bear. Over 17 years, Bear has played an integral role in every essential chapter of her life. However, Cat had a long-cherished wish for Bear to witness one pivotal moment in her life.

“Even though as a girl, I didn’t have dreams of a fairytale wedding, I always visualized Bear at my wedding, strolling in a little red wagon. That part was always crystal clear,” stated Cat.

Cat’s life took an unexpected yet delightful turn when she met Jimmy in 2011. Bear quickly became a part of their blossoming love story. Despite Cat’s college education demanding her away, Jimmy ensured Bear’s regular visits and their little family remained intact. They treasured every fleeting moment, aware that Bear was on borrowed time.

In 2018, merely a week before Cat and Jimmy’s much-awaited wedding, the couple was devastated as Bear’s health sharply deteriorated. At that moment, Cat was confronted with the excruciating reality that Bear may not make it to their wedding as she had always envisioned.

Upon this realization, Jimmy proposed an alternative to Cat.

“I proposed to Cat that we simple marry at the vet clinic so that Bear could be a part of the ceremony. I assured her that I would marry her any day, under any circumstances,” Jimmy shared passionately.

The fervent staff at VCA Veterinary Emergency Service & Veterinary Specialty Center, where Bear was being given treatment, fully supported the unexpected plan. Friends and family enthusiastically helped with the impromptu arrangements, appreciating the bond the couple shared with Bear and the significance of his presence on their big day.

On the unplanned wedding day, Bear’s entrance was one straight from Cat’s dreams: laying in his tiny red wagon. Though Bear was lethargic due to his health, his spirit lifted dramatically upon seeing his beloved family.

“We decided to hold the ceremony in a specific spot in the vet’s hallway because there was a picture on the wall resembling Bear,” reminisced Cat. “The atmosphere just felt right with him around.”

Despite the ceremony’s brief duration, Bear remained alert within his wagon. In a heartwarming twist, he managed to stand and walk outside—something he had not done for days.

“It was as if Bear summoned his last surge of strength just for us on our special day,” fondly recalled Cat.

Although the couple held their original wedding a week later, no occasion could overshadow their intimate ceremony at the vet clinic. Bear’s unexpected presence still lingers as one of their most cherished memories.

Today, as Bear’s health wanes once again, Cat and Jimmy continue their unabating support. Their love for Bear is so profound they declare they would recreate their vet hospital nuptials in a heartbeat, if needed.

“The anticipation and stress of wedding planning over a year faded into insignificance. What truly mattered was our unity as Jimmy and I became a married couple, with our dear Bear by our side,” said Cat affectionately.
