An incident that recently took place in beautiful Lahaina, Maui, caused quite a stir among locals and visitors alike. An endangered Hawaiian monk seal, affectionately known as Lani by locals, became the unsuspecting target of a tourist’s cruel action. This not-so-gentleman, a 37-year-old visitor from Seattle, unwisely decided to pick on the much-loved marine creature and faced swift outpouring of anger.
This unfortunate ordeal unfurled along the stunning Lahaina shoreline. Witnesses reported seeing the tourist getting too close comfort to Lani multiple times before flinging a hefty rock directly at her.
Rock Attack on Beloved Local Seal
Eye witness accounts tell us that the beloved Lani was resting peacefully near the shoreline on the day of the incident. One bystander, a resident of Maui named Kaylee Schnitzer, happened to film the shocking incident. She stated that the man picked up a rock as large as a coconut and threw it deliberately at the unsuspecting seal.
Voices in the video are heard shouting questions at the man questioning his outrageous action. When told that the police had been alerted, the man’s response was an arrogant ‘I don’t care. Fine me, I’m rich.’, displaying a complete disregard for his misconduct.
Hawaiian Monk Seals: A Species in Danger
The video documenting the tourist’s inexcusable behavior circulated rapidly on social media, inciting intense backlash from viewers. Hawaiian monk seals are among the rare marine species on the brink of extinction and enjoy protection under both the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA).
Reports from NOAA Fisheries indicate that the current seal population is only a third of what it was six decades back. Hence the outrage at the tourist’s action was both immediate and intense, given that Lani was already a beloved local icon.
A Quick Serving of ‘Karma’
Upon recognizing what had transpired, the bystanders couldn’t turn a blind eye. A shirtless man who witnessed the incident valiantly sprang into action, confronting the tourist physically. A video shared online shows him approaching the Seattle visitor from behind before tackling him to the ground and landing several quick punches.
This video, poignantly titled “Maui has a way of delivering karma like no other,” took the internet by storm. The quick-to-react local was hailed as a hero by thousands of viewers who praised his swift action in defending the endangered seal.
Social Recognition for the Defending Hero
This incident didn’t just make waves online but also caught the attention of key figures in the state of Hawaii. Hawaii state Sen. Brenton Awa announced that the heroic local even received a special recognition from lawmakers.
During a state meeting, Awa stated, “Our attorney over here wants to make it clear we don’t condone violence, but we did make a letter of recognition for Mr. Ambassador of Aloha.”
Stepping Up For Lani
Maui Mayor Richard Bissen also chimed in on the topic. Speaking passionately about the incident, he expressed, “Lani is not just a seal to us.” Adding that any act against the peaceful cohabitation with local wildlife will not be tolerated, Bissen assured that justice will be pursued against the offending tourist. His parting words, “Lani, we have your back,” echoed the sentiments of the entire community.
Unfolding Legal Proceedings Against the Tourist
The Department of Land and Natural resources identified the assailant as Ukrainian businessman Igor Lytvynchuk. He was questioned by the authorities post-incident but released, following his request for legal counsel. Although no criminal charges have been pressed yet, in line with the federal MMPA, the incident is undergoing further review.
