Karnak’s twilight bled crimson into Fitzroy River, WA. Kieran “Kedge” Turner lugged gear – pearl divers’ rig, lumbaginous in fading light. This river held stories.
Kedge joined saltwater tours post uni – sharing fish traps, mangrove lore with backpackers. “Mind tide.” At dusk, he busked guitar; kids danced “Shark Bay shuffle”.
Full moons Kedge fished offshore; snapper, mackerel. Locals knew spots – reef gaps, Dreaming channels. Back at camp, he’d carve boomerangs.
Brocade clouds warned cyclone season. Kedge joined evacuation crews – securing boats, mangrove stakes. At shelters, he told kids “Rain make country fat”.
Post-storm, Kedge trekked Billie Bay mangroves – checking traps, snapped limbs. A dugong nudged kid’s hand – “Uncle, bub swim like fish!”
Night brought muster – station hands, rodeo crew. Kedge rode wind-bit lines, hooting stockwhip cracks. Lily – rodeo crush – blew him kiss.
